D0711: Virginia Eastern Shore Curlew Decoy
Rare fat-bodied painted-eye Hudsonian curlew (whimbrel) decoy from Virginia's Eastern Shore, circa 1880, worn to bare wood and measuring roughly 12 1/2" in length. The decoy has the carved raised wings often associated with some of the decoys from the superlative William Matthews rig (Chincoteague, VA) and from the famous shorebirds of Cobb Island, although the wing carving on this decoy is deeper and more exaggerated than often seen. The tail is also more prominent, in something of a small paddle shape with a ridge down the top center. The small right lobe of the tail and the tip of the wings have been broken off. The base of the bill where it enters the head appears to be original; however, the last 3" of the bill is a very well done old replacement. There also appears to be a small amount of old filler on each side of the neck at the base where several small chips were repaired. Nonetheless, this is a fine and extremely desirable old gunning bird from an area rich in hunting tradition. Stand not included.

D0643: Golden Plover Decoy
Golden plover shorebird decoy by an unknown carver from Nantucket, Massachusetts, circa 4th quarter, 19th century. The solid-bodied bird with large tack eyes is in a mixture of original paint and old working repaint. The old bill is damaged with roughly 1/4" of its tip missing. There is some age splitting to its right side as well as a small chip and some wear to the tip of its tail. The bird has the letter "H" carved in its bottom and has been lightly hit by shot. It measures 9" in length. Stand not included.

D0669: English Wood Pigeon Decoy
Mint wood pigeon decoy by William Jaggard of Norfolk, United Kingdom, circa 1940s. In unused condition, this stylish pigeon has carved shoulders and wings, a cast metal bill and glass eyes. Painted in the species' fall plumage, the full-bodied carving measures 14" in length. Jaggard continued the carving buiness of his father-in-law, James Ralph. Stand not included.

Solid-bodied, split-tailed golden plover decoy with wax eyes by an unknown carver from Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, circa 4th quarter, 19th century. In original paint, it still retains its original baleen bill. Structurally excellent, the bird has the letter "H" carved in its bottom and has been lightly hit by shot. It measures 10" in length. M195: Gibian Feeding Ruddy Turnstone Decoy
Excellent feeding ruddy turnstone by Bill Gibian of Onancoke, Virginia. This is one of Bill's earlier carvings, circa 1985. In mint condition, this glass-eyed decorative carving, with its head cocked slightly to the left, has raised, split wings with carved primaries. It measures 10“ in length. “Gibian” is carved into the belly. Bill is recognized as one of today’s finest contemporary carvers and is featured in Loy Harrell's book, "Decoys: Sixty Living and Outstanding North American Carvers". Stand included.

D0662/D0663: Yellowlegs Decoy Pair
Very nice pair of yellowlegs decoys, including a very rare preener, by an unknown carver from Connecticut, circa 4th quarter, 19th century. Formerly in the collection of Marguerite Riordan, a well known and highly respected antiques dealer/collector from Connecticut, known for her unerring taste in New England furniture and folk art. The decoys are in worn original paint with the original bills. Although flat-sided (1 5/8” thick), all edges are nicely rounded and blended into the overall form. Both are split-tailed with relief-carved wings. The preener measures 8 3/4” from tail tip to breast while the other measures 10 1/4”, bill tip to tail tip. Stands not included.
